Indian T 20 team- Should we change a wine and bottle as well?

T20 cricket is like a lottery. One may not dwell too much into yesterday’s performance against New Zealand or be too critical, but you look at little nuances to see if the team is showing intent, passion or agression on the field, and unfortunately as we couldn’t see those traits in the last couple of matches.

I don’t know these players individually, hence I don’t want to make loose comments and go down that road, but it felt as if they were insipid, jaded, tactically looked all over the place.

What it comes down to? Playing too much cricket. Players could have served better with some rest after a hard-fought Test series. Look at Chris Woakes, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Asalanka, Bavuma for that matter. All of them look like fresh daisies, rejuvenated, refreshed, battle-hardened. Is it the case of too many cooks spoil the broth. There are too many strong personalities for me in that dressing room. More often than not it leads to chaos and confusion. Most importantly, team selection. I am baffled that they have preferred a club cricketer in Chakravarthy over a proven cricketer like Ravi Ashwin. He hasn’t played an international game for 5 months now, which is extremely baffling. You start to wonder if the captain has trust in his finger spinners. Why this constant persistence with Hardik Pandya? Performance has to be the barometer for selection and not past reputation.

T20 cricket is a swashbuckling game. England has completely re-invented the sport they first invented. India needs fearless operators to play this format. Virat has a staggering record in T20 where only thing consistent is inconsistency. Maybe, I think it is time to hand over the mantle to some fresh and young minds and legs, not only as a leader but as a player too. This is not a criticism of him, but just a means to prolong his Test and ODI career.

Selection committee has to think now…New wine and new bottle or old wine and new bottle?
