Suryakumar Yadav has arrived: India vs Srilanka ODI Series Review
The Mumbai Ranji team has been one of the best teams in the Indian Domestic Circuit producing cricketing legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Vijay Merchant, Rohit Sharma etc. and one such batting prodigy is Suryakumar Yadav. Piling up consistent runs for his domestic side, Suryakumar Yadav was picked up by the Mumbai Indians in the 2018 IPL Auctions. He swiftly became a vital cog in that Mumbai Indians batting line up. His aggressive style of play saw him piling up 524 runs in his breakthrough 2018 season for the Mumbai Indians and was their highest run getter. The 2019 season couldn’t be better for him as he kept on scoring runs to twin up with Mumbai Indians winning their 4th IPL title.
He was continuing his good form in the Domestic circuit and also got opportunities to play for the India A team, but he had to wait for that India opportunity. The 2020 IPL season was a revelation of what Suryakumar Yadav actually is. He played many vital knocks in the Mumbai Indians Title Defense Season but one standout knock was against the Virat Kohli led RCB , which defined Suryakumar Yadav as a complete package when he chased the score with sheer class and ease.
With Australia series knocking the doors flamboyant Surya kept on with his good form. But the heart break came towards the tail end of the season when the Australia Series Limited Overs Squads were announced, it was certainly a shock to many but yet another setback for Surya who had been nothing but promising for the past 3-4 years consistently. Although he did not lose hope and continued his purple patch thus helping Mumbai Indians win their 2nd consecutive title and their fifth over-all IPL title.
After India’s triumph over Australia in the tests, the England limited series was on the cards and the sky shone too bright for Suryakumar Yadav as he got his first ever opportunity in the Blues. He didn’t get a chance to bat in his maiden T20I but his much awaited time came in the 4th T20I , where India were one down in the 4th over itself and as an antsy yet upbeat Suryakumar came out at his skipper’s number 3 position and launched the very first ball out of that World’s Largest Narendra Modi Stadium for a massive six to Jofra Archer. He went on to score 57 runs and hence gaining the Man of the Match for his gutsy knock. Although he didn’t get a chance in the ODI Series, he set a bench mark in the Indian colors as well. As they say trust the process and gain the leaps, Suryakumar paved his way into the Srilanka Series on the back of another good IPL 2021 performance ( which was stalled midway due to increasing Covid 19 cases) and with major Indian cricketers unavailable it was Surya’s opportunity to flourish and gain. Surya amicably did so making his ODI debut in the Srilanka series and with his gritty techniques, some of his marquee shots like playing on the flick over extra cover and most importantly his ever increasing strike rate went on get him the Man of the Series award getting 124 runs at a stunning average of 62 .
There were some great performances by the Indian players throughout the series with Prithvi Shaw showing his masterclass, although not very consistent scoring huge runs but his technique has been second to none and his aggressive approach defines the bright future of this talent rich Indian cricket. With injury scares in that senior Indian camp in England, Suryakumar Yadav and his young mate Prithvi Shaw earned up call ups for the tests, the most pure format of cricket amongst the three. Suryakumar Yadav has really gone all the way and his time has come and it has been worth the wait.
