Olympic Updates for India on Day 1

Tokyo Olympics got off to a good start on Day one for India.Mirabai Chanu won silver medal in women’s 49kg weightlifting on Saturday.Here is how all the events unfolded for India.


Mirabai Chanu became only the second Indian weightlifter to win Olympic medal since Karnam Malleshwari won bronze in 2000 Sydney Games.Manipuri Mirabai lifted a total of 202kg to bag silver medal.She created Olympic record in clean and jerk with 115kg lift.Chanu lifted 87kg in snatch.

Table Tennis

There was mixed day for our paddlers in Tokyo on Saturday.Both Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee advanced in women’s singles.Batra beat Britain’s T Ho in straight sets.Mukherjee came back from 1-3 down to beat Bergstrom of Sweden in 7 sets.However mixed doubles pair of Achanta Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra were beaten by third seeded Chinese Taipei pair of Lin Ju and Cheng Ching in just 27 minutes.


In shooting,we were expecting at least two medals on Saturday.But it was disappointment for our women’s 10m air rifle shooters as both Elavenil Valarivan and Apurvi Chandela failed to reach the finals.In men’s 10m air pistol finals,Saurabh Chaudhary finished 7th.Abhishek Verma narrowly missed the finals cut.


Indian shuttlers also had a mixed day in Tokyo.Men’s doubles pairing of Satwik SaiRaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty beat world no.3 pair of Yang Lee and Chi Wang 21-16,16-21,27-25 in a thrilling Group A match.However B Sai Praneeth lost 17-21,15-21 to Zilberman in men’s singles Group D match.The loss must have been a painful for Indian as 47th ranked player from Israel.


In only boxing bout of the day for India,Vikas Krishan lost 5-0 to Okazawa in 69kg opener.Vikas was competing in his third Olympics.


Indian judoka Sushila Devi’s Olympic campaign ended after she lost to Eva in a round of 32 clash.Hungarian claimed the Ippon.


Indian rowers Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh finished fifth in heats and qualified for repeage round in men’s double sculls event at Tokyo Olympics on Saturday.Repeage round will take place on Sunday.


Indian men’s hockey team had to survive tense moments in the final few minutes to eke out 3-2 win over New Zealand.India came back from a goal down to beat Kiwis.P R Sreejesh was the hero as he made some fine saves in the closing stages of the match.Indian women suffered 1-5 defeat against top ranked Netherlands.
