It was a memorable Friday night in Lisbon for both Barcelona and Bayern Munich.German giants thrashed Catalan outfit 8-2 in quarterfinals of Champions League.Both clubs had won Champions league five times.Moreover,they also reached quarterfinals same number of times-18.So it was expected to be a close battle.Messi vs Lewandowski-one can say as both have scored majority of goals for their respective sides this season in Champions League.However it proved to be a disaster for Messi and Co.Here is how it unfolded.
Bayern began the proceedings with an early goal when Thomas Mueller scored in 4th minute.David Alaba scored an own goal three minutes later to even the contest 1-1.Barcelona missed a couple of chances in next few minutes with Neuer denied Suarez and Lionnel Messi hitting post.Germans regained the lead in 21st minute through Perisic.Bayern scored third through Gnabry who was unmarked amid fragile Barca defence.Low cross from Joshua Kimmich found Mueller and he made no mistake to give his side a healthy 4-1 lead at the break.
In the second half Luis Suarez gave some relief for Barcelona fans after he beat Jerome Boateng to score in 57th minute.Goal didn’t distract Bayern players as they continued to keep more possession.Canadian teenager Alphonso Davis made superb dribble to beat Nelson Semedo and passed to Kimmich who found the net to make it 5-2.Eight minutes from the end,in form Robert Lewandowski scoring from a header with Coutinho assist.Countinho put more misery on Barcelona with a brace in 84th and 88th minutes.
Barcelona lost a match by 8 goals or more for the first time in Champions League knockout game.They have lost 6 times against Bayern Munich in Champions League which is most defeats against any other side.It is the first time since 2008,Barcelona finished the season without a trophy.In sharp contrast,Bayern Munich have been successful this season with German Bundesliga winners and also DFB Pokal Cup.Bayern Munich will face either Manchester City or Lyon in the semis.The kind of form they are in,Bayern Munich are firm favourites for 6th Champions league title and a treble this season.
