On This Day In Cricket World Cup 1975…By Param deep Rathee

On this day in 1975 the First Men’s Cricket World Cup was begined. On the Inaugural day of the world cup 4 matches were played. Day 1 of tournament was historic in many ways and the Reasons are:
1. The first century in the championship was scored by Dennis Amiss of England when he made 137 against India 
2. Former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar played 29 overs (174 balls) out of India’s 60 overs to score just 36 runs against England. Gavaskar, who opened the innings for India, hit just one four and remained unbeaten and was widely criticized for his innings.
3. England beat India by 202 runs which was  biggest win in ODI till 1984-85.
4. Glenn Turner 171* vs East Africa was first 150+ individual score in ODI.
5. Dennis Lillee recorded the first five-wicket haul in ODI cricket, taking 5 wickets for 34 runs in 12 overs against Pakistan at Headingley.
6. Srilanka playing their first ever ODI match were thrashed by mighty Windies by 9 wickets.
