After putting Australia to bat first at the Oval Ground, the openers gave a decent start putting up 80 runs on the board. Skipper Aaron Finch took on the bowlers from the word Go hitting a magnificent 153 off 135 balls laced with 15 boundaries and 5 sixes. Finch whose form was going on and off since a long time finally seems to be back to the groove hitting some gorgeously powerful shots. Finch also stitched a brilliant 173 run stand with Steve Smith (73) which played a big role in Australia reaching the team total of 334/7 in 50 overs. There was nothing much to boast about the bowlers apart from Dhananjay and Isuru bagging 2 wkts each.
Chasing 335, an easy win was expected for Australia considering the form Sri Lankan team is in but much to the desire of all the Sri Lankan fans, for the 1st time they seemed liked giving a tough fight to the powerful team. The openers Dimuth and Kusal gave a brilliant 115 run stand in just 15 overs which set up a positive momentum. Dimuth top scored with 97 runs but it was the middle and lower middle order which again failed to capitalize despite the match being in their hands at one stage.
Sri Lanka fronm 153/2 were all out for 247 runs in a yet another choke into their list of losses. Mitchell Starc has been completely unstoppable this World Cup spitting fire in every match he plays. With 4/55, starc was the pick of the bowlers as Australia won the match by 87 runs wherein Aaron Finch was declared “Man of the match”
