Choosing players for the World Cup Squad is a balancing act  By Sudhansu R Das

The Indian Cricket Team Management should pick up the right combination for the world cup 2019 keeping in view of the grass-topped wickets, quality spin bowling andEnglishweather. The recent IPL matches have popped up some talented players who can make it to the Indian Squad.

The selectors can take the views of veterans like Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Kapil Dev, Chetan Sharma and Sanjay Manjrekar who are known for their free and frank opinion. It is not necessary that the World Cup squad should have players with brilliant past records. In fact, consistency, temperament, sound footwork, mental toughness, application of mind and current form should be taken into account while picking up players for the world cup team.

In the past five years, India has not groomed a genuine all-rounder who could have been an asset for the world cup team. In the absence of a genuine all-rounder, Team India can rely on batsmen who can bowl a few overs. Batsman cum bowlers like Virendra Shehwag, Yuvraj Singh and Sachin Tendulkar contributed a lot to India’s victory during the world cup matches. Among the fresh batting talents, Prithvi Shaw and Kedar Yadav can bowl spin and add to Indian bowling diversity. Prithvi is an attacking batsman with wide range of strokes. Brian Lara compared Prithvi Shaw with Virender Sehwag.

Frankly speaking the Indian top order suffers from serious footwork flaw against quality spin bowling which is exposed in the IPL matches. One can observe how Nabi, Harbhajan, Gopal, Imran Tahir, Chahal, Ravinder Jadeja, Rashid Khan and Kuldeep make the Indian top order fumble. It won’t be a surprise if the opponent team opens their bowling attack with a quality spinner.

Kedar Yadav has good footwork, presence of mind and he has the ability to rotate score board under crunch situation. Mayank Agarwal has proved on a number of occasions that he could stay in wicket and hit the ball hard too. Indian top order can rally around Virat Kohli to make a grand start while Dhoni should lead the middle order to tear apart the bowling attack. Bhubaneswar Kumar, Shami and Ravinder Jadega can wag the tail with some lusty hitting.

Team India desperately needs a leg spin googly bowler. Shreyas Gopal who ranks 5th in the purple cap holder list in IPL can be the right choice for the team. Gopal has taken eight wickets for 102 runs in five innings. A leg spinner could be a potential weapon in the world cup 2019.

Deepak Chahar and Navdeep Saini can strengthen Indian pace attack. Chahar has got the reputation of bowling the maximum number of dot balls in the IPL tournament. While maintaining good line and length, Chahar is consistent in taking wickets. Saini who bowls at an average speed of 142km per hour can be effective on grass topped wickets in England.

A balanced team without a good leader is of no use. Virat Kohli after losing T-20 and ODIs series against young Australian team does not have the tact to turn defeat into victory. The six IPL defeats in a row put a question mark on his captainship skill. No doubt he is the best batsman in the world today in all formats. Former Indian captain MS Dhoni should return to captainship. At 37, Dhoni is still in terrific form and he has guided CSK to victory in six IPL matches. With a record 100 IPL victories in his kitty, Dhoni is the right person to guide Team India to victory.
