Young paddlers from Maharashtra continued to dazzle in the 11SPORTS National Ranking Table Tennis Tournament (South Zone), with Deepti Patil, Reagan Alberquerque and Chinmaya Somaiya sweeping three of the four possible medals in the Junior Boys’ category. Later, Manushree Patil too picked up a bronze in the DRM Municipal Indoor Hall on Sunday evening, to swell the state’s tally to four.
In the bottom half of the Junior Boys’ roster, Reagan Alberque and Chinmaya Somaiya eased through their early rounds to set up a clash in the semifinals. Chinmaya lost 2-4 after a brief fightback in the middle of the contest to settle for the bronze medal.
In the other half, Deepti Patil too had an easy ride until he came face to face with Reagan. It was a fitting battle for the gold, going away till the last point of the epic 7-set clash. Deepti eventually proved to be the victor, taking the decider 13-11 in the Junior Girls’ category, Manushree Patil missed out on a spot in the decoder 13-11 in the Junior Girls’ category, Manushree Patil missed out on a spot in the finals, losing against Madhya Pradesh’s Anusha Kutumbale. After winning the first two games, Manushree seemed to cruise ahead. But Anusha leveled the scores and won the next two sets to tumble out with a bronze in her bag.
