Ajit wadekar one of the most successful captains of India breathed his last in Mumbai

He was 77, Wadekar was first Indian Captain who won away series in England and the West Indies on their home soil in 1970-71.

He was a left-handed batsman, who represented India in 37 Tests and made 2113 runs between 1966 and 1974. Also happens to be one of the most stylish left handed batsman India has ever seen. Sometimes stats don’t describe the persona & aura of a player and Ajit Wadekar was one of those examples.

He led again India to a series win over England on their home soil & thus making 3 series wins in a row. These victories were Special as west indies were led by shrewd Sobers and England by Illingworth. Both these teams at that time were the most feared and invincible with no one expecting India would defeat them!

It was under his Captainship that Sunil Gavaskar made his test debut
Very few know that Wadekar was selected captain after chairman of selection committee Vijay Merchant gave Casting vote in his favour ahead of Patudi. He stepped down as captain after 1974 england tour in which india lost all 3 tests. He was also the receipient of Padmashri and arjuna awards.
