Defenaneeth ding champion B. Sai Praneeth crashed out of the Singapore Open badminton tournament to Japan’s Yu Igarashi in the opening round of men’s singles competition on Wednesday.
Sixth seed Praneeth, who has been out of a form of late went down 21-16, 16-21, 18-21 to Igarashi.
Meanwhile, Sourabh Verma, Subhankar Dey, Ruthvika Shivani Gadde and Rituparna Das advanced to the second round after notching up contrasting wins in the opening round.
India’s mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N. Sikki Reddy beat Germany’s Jones Ralfy Jansen and Carla Nelte 21-19, 16-21, 21-12 to enter the second round.
However, it was curtains for former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist R.M.V. Gurusaidutt and young Vaishnavi Reddy Jakka.
WOMEN SHINE AT ASIAN JUNIOR MEET
The women shuttlers shone bright but it turned out to be a mixed opening day for India in the Badminton Asia Junior Championships at Jakarta.
Women shuttlers Dipti Kutty, Medha Shashidharan and Kavipriya Selvam moved into the next round after brushing aside easy opponents in their opening matches.
It was after two Indian pairs suffered losses-Srikrishna Sai and Srishti Jupudi and Orijit Chaliha and Preethi lost in mixed doubles.
