3 Reasons why Germany lost to Mexico!
Germany started their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 defeat against Mexico, which shocked many football fans. Mexico’s Lozano finished of brilliant counter attacking move in 35th minute, which was only goal of the match. This defeat will be certainly a wake up call for Germany who are one of the favourites to win the World Cup. It was frustrating game for Germans as they created only few goal scoring chances. Let’s have a look at some of the key reasons behind Germany’s defeat.
1. Slow transition from attack to defence-
Germany played with high defence line, and both of their fullbacks kimmich and plattenhardt played high up the pitch, which left lot of space behind them. Mexico were set up to play counter attacking football, and they took full advantage of the space left behind by German fullbacks, and fact that Germany played with high defence line aslo helped Mexico. German players were extremely slow in tracking back after losing possession. Midfielders Sami Khedira and kroos along with both of their fullbacks were often out of position while defending against Mexico’s quick attacks.
2. Lack of creativity in final third-
Germany created very few chances throughout the game. Their combination play especially in final third was not up to their usual level. They missed a player who can beat opponents with pace and skill, although coach Jochim Low brought on Reus in rhe second half to inject some pace in game, but he also failed to make any impact on the game. German forwards Thomas Muller and Julian Draxler were not involved in the game much. They made very few off the ball runs, and fact that Mexico played with lot of men behind the ball didn’t help them.
3. Brilliant performance from Mexico-
Mexico were deserving winners. They played with high intensity, putting lot of men behind the ball. Their pressing was excellent, and after winning the ball they were direct and looked to get forward, and as a result they were excellent on counter attack throughout the game. They executed their game plan successfully as they did not press high up the field, but as soon as ball arrived in the midfield they were quick and aggressive in their pressing.
