India makes us Proud at the Goldcoast 2018 Commonwealth Games


India finished third overall in medals tally at Commonwealth Games which concluded at Gold Coast in Brisbane,Australia on Sunday.

As expected shooting gave us maximum medals 16.While there were seasoned shooters who won golds for India in Gold Coast,the stars emerged from this CWG are teenage shooters Manu Bhaker and Anish Bhanwala.16 year old Manu won gold in 10m women’s air pistol shattering CWG record with 240.9 to become youngest ever gold medallist for India at CWG.Four days later 15 year old Anish Bhanwala broke Manu’s record whenhe won gold in 25m rapid fire pistol.Anish is class X student and will appear for his exam in the next few days.Seasoned Jitu Rai won gold medal in 10m Air Pistol while Heena Sidhu won the yellow metal in women’s 25m pistol. Tejaswini Sawant won gold in 50m rifle 3 position in addition to her silver in 50m rifle prone.In the double trap Shreyasi Singh won gold among women. Delhi born Ankur Mittal claimed bronze for men in double trap.37 year old Sanjeev Rajput won gold in 50m rifle 3 position.Om Mitharval won bronze in 50m men’s pistol event and in 10m Air Pistol event.Apurvi Chandela too did not disappoint taking bronze in 10m women’s air rifle event.Mehuli Ghosh won silver in 10m Air rifle while Ravi Kumar won bronze.
In wrestling we won 12 medals including 5 golds.Double Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar silenced his critics with gold in 74kg freestyle winning easily against his opponents.Maharashtrian Rahul Aware finally got his reward after 12 years as he won gold in 57kg freestyle.Rahul was the victim of Wrestling Federation of India which sent Indian team to Glasgow in 2014 CWG without selection trials.Furthermore,he was not sent to Rio Olympics due to controversial selection of Haryana wrestler,Sandip Tomar in 57kg.category in his place.However with this gold medal he has revived his Olympic hopes.23 year old Vinesh Phogat won gold in 50kg freestyle.Vinesh had a career threatening injury during 2016 Rio Olympics.She won most of her matches via technical superiority.
Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik settled for bronze in 60kg freestyle in an event played in round robin format.Sumit and Bajrang Punia won gold in 125 kg and 60kg respectively.Mausam Khatri,Babita Kumari,Pooja Dhanda were silver medallists for India.Somveer,Divya Kakran and Kiran won bronze to take our tally to 12 medals from wrestling.
Mirabai Chanu won gold medal in 48kg while Sanjita Chanu followed her with gold in 53kg weightlifting.Other gold medals in weightlifting were Punam Yadav,Venkat Rahul and Satish Sivalingham.Pardeep Singh and Gururaja won silver medals while Deepak Lather and Vikas Thakur won bronze medals in weightlifting.
Table tennis gave us more delight with 8 medals including 3 golds.Both our men’s and women’s teams won gold medal for the first time in CWG.Manika Batra won singles gold medal.She  beat world no.4 Feng of Singapore in singles semis and in team event.Manika also became the first ever Indian woman to win gold medal in table tennis singles.She along with Mouma Das won silver in women’s doubles.Along with G Sathiyan she also won bronze in mixed doubles taking her tally to 4 medals this CWG.Sharath Kamal won bronze in men’s singles and silver in men’s doubles along with G Sathiyan.Harmeet Desai and Sathiyan also won bronze in doubles.
In badminton India led by Saina Nehwal won mixed team gold.Saina also won singles gold beating Sindhu in the final.Kidambi Srikanth won silver in singles losing to second seed Lee Chong Wei.Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won silver in doubles.Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy won bronze in women’s doubles.
In boxing we win total of 9 medals.M C Mary Kom at 35 in her debut Games won gold in 48kg category.She also became the only female boxer to win gold for India at CWG.Vikas Krishan won gold in 75kg category.Vikas became first ever Indian boxer to win gold medals in both Asian and Commonwealth Games.At the end of the year Vikas will turn pro at the end of this year.Gaurav Solanki also won gold in 52kg.Settling for silver medals were Amir Panghal,Manish Kaushik and Satish Kumar.Hussamuddin,Naman Tanwar and Manoj Kumar won bronze medals.This is India’s best ever medal haul in boxing at mega event.
Sachin Chaudhary won bronze in Para Powerlifting.
In athletics 20 year old sensation Neeraj Chopra won gold in javelin throw with his season best throw of 86.47m.Junior world record holder Neeraj is a bright medal prospect for India in Olympics.It was only 5th time Indian national anthem was played at CWG athletics field.Seema Punia won  silver medal in discuss throw taking her tally to 4 medals at quadrennial event dating back from 2010.Navjeet Dhillon won bronze in discuss throw.
Among Indians who shined but could not win a medal were Jinson Johnson in 1500m and Arpinder Singh in triple jump.Johnson broke 23 year old national record when he finished with 03:37:86 seconds.Arpinder finished fourth in triple jump.Mohammad Anas became the first Indian after Milkha Singh to reach finals of 400m at CWG.Anas finished fourth in the race missing medal by a whisker.
India finished with 26 gold,20 silver and 20 bronze medals.We bettered our last CWG medals tally.More significant is the fact that we finished 3rd with help of  more gold medals won this time.This is our second best showing at CWG after Delhi 2010.Boxers,paddlers,shuttlers,wrestlers and shooters have made us proud.Only drawback was in hockey where there was disappointment as both men and women teams finished fourth missing out on a medal.
Now we can hope for good show by our athletes in Asian Games also  later this year.
