Australian Open Quarterfinals

The world number one Rafael Nadal retired against Marin Cilic in the fifth set due to muscle in his upper right leg started troubling him on Rod Laver Arena. Unseeded Kyle Edmund and Elise Mertens make the semi-finals. Elina Svitolina with 6-4, 6-0 became the first Belgian to make the semis after Kim Clijsters in 2012. She will be playing 2nd seeded Caroline Wozniacki. M. Cilic the 6th seed said it was “sad” to win in such a way but also added, “I played great tennis, very high level”. Edmund had no trouble beating Dimitrov with 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and became the only 4th British man to reach the Australian Open Semi-finals in the post-1968 Open Era.

He is the only British man in the draw after Andy Murray’s injury withdrawal before the tournament. Murray has been a 5-time finalist but lost them all. Elise Mertens is on a hot streak unbeaten in 10 matches after winning in Hobart. Svitolina blamed her hip injury for the outing as she failed again to get to the last four of a Grand Slam on her 22nd attempt. Wozniacki made it to the semis for the first time since 2011, overcoming familiar foe Suarez Navarro 6-0, 6-7(3/7), 6-2 as she came closer to the first ever Grand Slam Title after a decade of trying.
