Maharashtra Govt.announced project called Mission one million to promote football and particularly FIFA U-17 World Cup which will be held in India next month.Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started Mission Eleven Million to promote football among kids and improve overall sports movement in the country.
For the first time India is hosting FIFA event.
Football is ‘numerous uno’ sport across the globe. It is known as a beautiful game.India is ranked below 100 in the world. In India
cricket is way above other sports in terms of money, popularity,
infrastructure..etc.India had earlier hosted major events like 1952 and 1982 Asiad,2003 Afro Asian Games,2008 Youth Commonwealth Games and 2010 Commonwealth Games. However focus was given on our athletes only during the Games. After competition got over we were left with only cricket as media continued it’s obsession with cricket. Cricket also has a packed schedule throughout the year. In Mumbai which is one of the cities where U-17 World Cup matches will be held there is no guarantee that the spectators will turn in large numbers to see Indian team play their matches as compared to Kolkata,Goa where football crazy fans will support the national team in almost full stadiums.
Just by hosting major event does not necessarily mean we have done a good job.We have to carry that momentum forward by picking future stars and give them proper guidance so that one day these youngsters play in our senior national team and so on.This way we can popularise football and new generations will take up the sport as a career.
