US OPEN TENNIS-2017- QUICK EXPERT REVIEW BY SHAILESH

Last grand Slam of 2017, US Open ended with Rafael Nadal winning men’s singles title beating Kevin Anderson of South Africa.

6-3,6-3,6-4 in the final on Sunday in New York..This year there was depleted field in men’s singles as five out of top ten players were missing through injuries.The likes of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray,Stan Wawrinka,Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic were absent due to which the focus was only on world number one Nadal and third seed Federer. Fans were already dreaming about possible first ever match up in US Open  involving two of the greatest players of all time.However 2009 champion Del Potro spoiled the party as he beat Federer in four sets in quarterfinals ending hopes of much anticipated showdown between Nadal and Federer in semis.Nadal has been plagued by injuries for the past two years.Some pundits wrote him off after he withdrew prior to third round of French Open last year with a wrist injury.However in 2017 he came back strongly with two Grand Slam titles other being record 10th French Open.
Nadal came back from a set down thrice en route to his title in Big Apple.Pablo Carreno Busta and Dominic Thiem emerged stars for the future.Sixth seed Thiem lost a thrilling five setter to Del Potro in the quarterfinals after leading by two sets to love. 26 year old Busta did not drop a set until the semifinals where he lost to Anderson in four sets.
There were plenty of surprises in women’s singles as for the first time since 1981 there were all Amercians in the semifinals.Sloane Stephens beat Venus Williams in three sets while Madison Keys won against CoCo Vandeweghe in semis.Stephens won her first Grand Slam tilte beating Keys 6-3,6-0.in the final.
Martina Hingis was the star of doubles as she along with Jamie Murray of Britain won mixed doubles title.Hingis pairing Taiwan’s Yung Jan Chan won women’s doubles title beating Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova 6-3,6-2 in the final.
Among Indians playing,Leander Paes partnering Purav Raja lost in the second round of mens doubles.However Paes at 44 was the oldest player competing in New York this year.Sania Mirza and Shuai Peng lost in semifinals of womens doubles to Martina Hingis and Yung Jan Chan 6-4,6-4.
